Mercedes-Benz G-Class Review The 2010 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is no curvy crossover in the latest idiom. Based on a design built for the Shah of Iran's military, the G-Class has evolved only slightly in the two decades or more since it was first engineered. The 2010 Mercedes Benz AMG E63 is part of the 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class, which received a major facelift and left behind the friendly smile of the previous E-Class for the far more aggressive scowl. These upgrades have been echoed throughout the lineup, from the gas and diesel powered E350 through the E550, and those edgy improvements are punctuated by the power of the 2010 Mercedes Benz AMG E63. While the 2010 AMG E63 looks great, it's packed with enough power to keep up with just about any luxury car in the world and a revised suspension system to handle even the sharpest high speed turns. The 2010 Mercedes Benz AMG E63 wears the same angular new skin as its less powerful siblings, but the front fenders are 17mm wider to accomadate the 19" alloy wheels wrapped in high performance rubber. The headlights appear to be similar to the E350 and E550, but unique LED daytime running lights and bi-xenon headlights give the 2010 Mercedes Benz AMG E63 a high tech look. Overall, the new E63 is a great looking car, but the big news is what you cant see when its sitting still.

The 2010 Mecedes Benz AMG E63 is powered by the same engine as the AMG SL63 roadster, which is the 32 valve, 6.3L V8 pumping out an awesome 518 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. The 2010 E63 also borrows its transmission from the roadster, with a 7-speed automatic transmission named the AMG SPEEDSHIFT offering similar performance to a manual transmission, but without a clutch pedal. This high -tech automatic transmissions has four different preprogrammed shift modes, offering varying stages of performance; "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual), and each of them offers a stronger, more positive shift than the prior. This drivetrain setup allows the 2010 Mercedes Benz AMG E63 to dash from 0-60 in just 4.4 seconds and to hit a top speed of 155mph, but that is limited by the computer. The good news is that even with more power and improved performance, the 2010 E63 gets better fuel economy than its predecessor. The acceleration and top speed of the 2010 Mercedes Benz AMG E63 is impressive, but the folks at AMG left nothing untouched, including the suspension system. Like the transmission, the suspension offers the driver full control between comfort and performance. Tuned suspension at all four corners allow the car to handle better, and the new AMG Ride Control system lets the driver select between Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus suspension modes. This makes the 2010 AMG E-Class not only ride like a luxury car, but at the push of a button it will handle like a race car.

When it comes to shaking up the luxury car world, no amount of power, technological sophistication or supple leather in the cabin can top an alluring design. More stunning in person than even the most flattering photography might suggest, the coupelike Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class has a visual presence that few other luxury sedans can match. And that is something that's not likely to change for some time to come.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS is available as the CLS550 or the CLS63 AMG. For both models, expect all the typical powered controls and luxury accoutrements. Mercedes' Airmatic suspension system comes standard, too, giving the CLS enough adjustability to suit every type of driver. Left in its standard Comfort mode, it responds with typical luxury car motions -- soft when it needs to be and stiff enough to maintain sufficient control at all times. Additional settings programmed for more aggressive driving are available should you desire more precisely controlled handling. As the rear-wheel-drive CLS is meant to be a relatively exclusive and upscale car, Mercedes hasn't bothered to offer a V6-powered model. Rather, the lineup starts with the CLS550. It's equipped with a 5.5-liter V8 developing 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The CLS63 AMG has a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 507 hp and 465 lb-ft. A seven-speed automatic with Sportronic manual-shift capability is the sole gearbox for both trims. Paddle shifters are standard on the CLS63 and optional on the CLS550. With so many gears and so much torque at its disposal, the CLS is never far from its sweet spot, making the sizable luxury sedan every bit as quick as its horsepower numbers suggest. The CLS63 AMG needs only 4.4 seconds to hit 60 mph.

The new S-Class line up from Mercedes-Benz is an astounding display of technology and art enhanced for the love of driving. Making the Mercedes S550 the best riding and handling four-door sedan money can buy. At the front: a four-link air suspension with antilift control, gas shock absorbers, stabilizer and anti-dive system. At the rear: multilink independent air suspension and antisquat system. On the road: the German luxobarge smothers road imperfections with extreme prejudice, out-Jaguaring Jaguar by a wide margin. Even better, hurling Mercedes' 4376-pound behemoth into a corner is like riding a Maglev train; the S550 leans slightly and then glides through all but the tightest turns. The car's dynamics are virtually indefatigable.

New Features and Tech Specs.
One of the most noticeable changes across the lineup is the addition of daytime LED running lights fitted to the outer edges of the bi-xenon lamp units. This new headlight technology is has brighter light output while consuming less energy. Mercedes Benz claims that with only low beam headlights, the driver can see up to 1000 ft with out blinding other drivers using this new technology.The rear end is also accented with a total of 52 distinctively arranged LEDs in the two taillights. Gone are the body-colored strips through the taillamps. Another noticeable change at the front of the car is a more pronounced arrow-shaped grille, plus a new front bumper with a light-catching contour and a chrome strip below the cooling air intakes. Exhaust tailpipes of all S-Class variants are now visibly integrated into the rear bumper. Camera and radar-based driver assistance systems include Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and the Pre-Safe brake system linked to the proximity regulating radar, which intervenes autonomously before an impending rear-end collision. Other highlights include the Attention Assist driver drowsiness monitor and Active Body Control with automatic crosswind stabilization. Engineers also managed to improve the night-vision system with the introduction of Night View Assist PLUS, which is equipped a special pedestrian detection function. The Pre-Safe braking system has also been improved to reduce injuries in unavoidable crashes. Mercedes says the car can apply maximum braking pressure automatically around 0.6 seconds before what is recognized as an unavoidable accident. The system therefore acts as something like an electronic crumple zone, Mercedes contends. The multifunction steering wheel of the S-Class has been modified for improved aesthetics and feel. The rim and airbag module are now lined with soft premium leather as standard. The new, flatter airbag module also lends a sporty touch to the multifunction steering wheel. More fancy driving aids such as speed limit and lane change assist help make driving a more pleasurable experience. The vehicle will read street signs and display them on the command panel as well as react with them accordingly. Other highly regarded Mercedes Benz technology such as attention assist, pre-safe seat belt tensioning, brake pre-application technology, plus other surprise technologies not yet released. Next, notice the split view LCD screen in the front. This split screen offers a special driver view and passenger view. The passengers can be watching movies while the drive can see GPS and vehicle information from the same screen. Different angle of view point changes what is displayed on the LCD screen.

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Review
The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class luxury roadster is available in SLK300, SLK350 and SLK55 AMG trims. The SLK300 features a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 228 horsepower while the SLK350's 3.5-liter V6 produces 300 hp. The SLK300 can be matched with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission, while the SLK350 gets only the auto. The SLK55 AMG boasts a beefy 355-hp 5.4-liter V8 that comes only with a seven-speed automatic.

Walkaround
The hardtop takes up space in the trunk, but there's still 6.5 cubic feet left for luggage. Inside, the cabin is attractive and features the expected soft-touch dash materials, but the COMAND interface can be frustrating. The seats look simple but provide good support even after several hours of driving. Keep the windows up while the top is down and there's minimal wind buffeting. If that's not enough, consider the optional Airscarf system that channels warm air to your neck and shoulders via dedicated registers in the headrests. It actually works quite well, teaming up with the seat heaters to make the SLK one of the most useful all-weather convertibles on the market. The current SLK delivers solid all-around performance in acceleration, braking and handling. Obviously, the AMG model offers the most performance of the group, but even the 300 and 350 models are fun to drive. The SLK's slightly less communicative steering and slower handling responses only become apparent when comparing them directly against this segment's more single-minded sports cars.

Summary
Though they suffered from uninspiring handling and questionable sporting credentials for hard-core driving enthusiasts, the original SLK230 and SLK320 were popular with consumers. The current second-generation SLK is intended as a more serious sports car, featuring a dramatic design inspired by Mercedes' Formula 1 racecars, and a more capable suspension. As a convertible that provides good all-season performance along with luxury and prestige, we think a new or used Mercedes-Benz SLK is a solid choice.

2010 Mercedes E-Class Review
As Mercedes-Benz expanded its lineup to some 15 separate nameplates, not counting the AMG models, it resulted in mass confusion on the showroom floor and significant marketing challenges in promoting individual models. Things needed to get simpler, and now they have. The replacements for Mercedes mid-sized CLK-class coupe and cabriolet models will henceforth be identified as part of the E-class family. (The CL coupes will also become part of the S-class lineup.) The new E coupe has more suspension and powertrain bits in common with the E than the C, according to Mercedes-Benz USA product manager Bernhard Glaser. Dimensionally, however, the E coupe is much closer to the compact C than the mid-sized E, sharing the 108.7-inch wheelbase of the C-class, and the exterior dimensions remain within an inch or two of the C even given the wider, longer, and lower bodywork. Compared with the E-class sedan, however, the E coupe has a three-inch-lower roof and five fewer inches of wheelbase, and is about 200 pounds lighter, seven inches shorter, and a whopping five-and-a-half inches narrower.

Walkaround
Mercedes clearly wants the E coupe to be seen as an E, and so it adopts the sedans design cues, including quad headlamps and the Ponton-inspired rear quarters. Few pieces are actually shared, however; look closer and you'll notice that the fender contours are ever-so-slightly exaggerated compared with those of the sedan and that the low-beam headlamps are unique, which also describes the grille treatment, featuring two bars bracketing the three-pointed star, whereas the sedan has three or four grille slats with a vertical hood ornament. Most distinct, however, is the roof line, which like that of the CLK, remains pillar-less (that is, if you don't count the mullion that forms the little rear quarter window). Wheels start out at 17 inches in diameter, with 18s optional on the E350 and standard on the E550. All E coupes get a full-length, partially retractable moon roof as standard equipment, the light from which is particularly appreciable from the snug rear bucket seats. In the front row, the low-mounted seats ensure a sporty driving position, and settling in is made easier as the seat belts are presented upon start-up by motorized arms. The driver faces a dashboard that recalls the sedans retro-inspired, angular cabinetry without copying it outright; differences include a subtle V-shape that helps reduce the designs imposing squareness, while a conventional console-mounted transmission shifters found on the C-class stands in for the sedans column-mounted electronic gear stalk.

Summary
The driver faces arguably one of Mercedes best-ever gauge clusters, which combines five Porsche-like intersecting circles with clear, crisp displays. All E-classes feature Mercedes COMAND infotainment system that bundles secondary controls into a reasonably sensible screen-based interface, and E550 coupes add navigation as standard. Other options include front seat ventilation, pneumatically adjustable seat bolsters, and a five-channel surround sound stereo.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is no curvy crossover in the latest idiom. Based on a design built for the Shah of Iran's military, the G-Class has evolved only slightly in the two decades or more since it was first engineered. It's one of the most capable sport-utes on the planet-and one of the most expensive. With a base price of more than $100,000, the G- Class is a cult object and a celebrity magnet, with its only real competition being the Land Rover Range Rover or, possibly, the Lexus LX 470 and HUMMER H2.

Walkaround
The 2010 G-Class certainly stands out from the crowd. Its design is based on military vehicles, and as such it can seem very basic. The sides are flat, the windshield is very nearly vertical, and the overall shape is strikingly boxy in an age where even pickup trucks have gone aero. The interior's more of the same, with rugged shapes, flat door panels, and lots of tall glass areas-but it is decked out in leather and chrome in abundance, to justify the G-Class' extreme price tag. For 2010, buyers will see light cosmetic touches like new side trim and chrome accents, with a leather-padded dash inside. Two G-Class models are defined by their powertrains. The 2010 G550 sports Mercedes' widely used, smoothly stalwart 382-horsepower V-8 engine coupled to a seven-speed automatic. The 5.5-liter, 500-hp G55 AMG adds an intercooled supercharger and upgrades to a beefier five-speed automatic to push the barn-door body through the atmosphere. The G550 accelerates to 60 mph in about 8 seconds; the G55 AMG pounces more brutishly to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, while gulping gas to the tune of 11/13 mpg. The smaller V-8 manages 12/15 mpg.

Summary
There are many luxury conveniences fitted to the G-Class. It's also quieter at rest and more muscular inreal-world acceleration. Since 1996, Mercedes-Benz has sold over a half million SLKs, making it best-selling luxury roadster in the world, bar none. To keep the competition at bay, Mercedes has tweaked all three grades of its retractable-hardtop hottie. But first, let's look at the lineup: For 2009, all models get new shoes and a nose job -- trimmed back a bit, with the wings fleshed out for a more Formula 1 look. Larger mesh in the grille and redesigned foglamps round out the front-end revisions. The back has been cleaned up as taillamps are now tinted, exhaust tips are squared off, and the accent lines have been rubbed out. The lower valence has been styled to look like a diffuser.

Model Line Up and Interrior Features
Interior changes are even harder to spot: Redesigners freshened up the instrument cluster and head unit, which has also been updated with Mercedes's next-generation NTG 2.5 electronics system. There's also a new three-spoke steering wheel, which now controls Benz's new Direct Steer system, but we'll get to that in a moment. For individual models, there are few additional changes. The 2009 SLK280 nameplate goes away, replaced by SLK300, even though Mercedes made no change to the 3.0-liter, 228-horsepower V-6. At least its naming convention for its mildest roadster is now consistent. Pricing hasn't been released, but Mercedes informs us it'll stay near 2007 levels. At the extra-spicy-crispy end of the spectrum, the SLK55 AMG remains essentially unchanged, aside from the aforementioned tweaks. Affalterbach's hot-rodster still packs 5.4 liters of V-8 heat, detuned to 355 horsepower and paired with the same paddle-shiftable seven-speed automatic transmission. Additional AMG treatments include sexier aero parts, 18-inch alloys, beefier 325mm brake discs, a sportier flat-bottom steering wheel, and a 200-mph speedometer.The middle-child SLK350 gains the biggest improvements in the form of a significantly modified 3.5-liter engine. Changes include lighter pistons, stronger valves, and conical valve springs, as well as a redesigned intake manifold and higher compression ratio (11.7:1 versus 10.7:1). Camshaft position has also been advanced five degrees on both the intake and exhaust sides. All told, these changes have resulted in gains of 32 horsepower and 7 lb-ft, torque, to 300 and 265 respectively.

Summary
So with all these changes, is it possible to feel the difference from the driver's seat? No, not really. Don't get me wrong, both the $50,000-ish SLK350 and $65,000-esque SLK55 AMG are fine-driving vehicles. It's just that, with the top down, who can discern a 32-horsepower improvement? Everything feels fast and sounds good -- particularly when the V-6 sings lustily near its 7200-rpm redline and barks a bit on the seven-speed transmission's throttle-blipped downshifts.Ditto for the 55, though its tone is less tenor and more bellicose baritone jump off the gas and hear that back-pressure burble. It's positively fearsome when you're top-down and wide open in tunnels and canyons.What you can feel is a decided improvement in the steering feel. Mercedes implemented its new Direct Steer system on the SLK and it's a throwback -- a mechanical solution in the age of complicated electronics and algorithms. The problem Direct Steer attempts to address is the balance between freeway-cruising comfort and canyon-carving sharpness. The heart of this variable ratio system is a steering rack with specially shaped and spaced teeth. A standard pinion gear rides on top, but as it turns the steering ratio can change dramatically and instantly because it's all done mechanically (with hydraulic power assist, of course).Mercedes claims the number of turns from lock to lock has been reduced by 25 percent, and on the road, the SLKs felt noticeably sharper, without that dead spot on-center. More important is that the system is natural and progressive, free of that disconnected, artificial feel many of the steer-by-wire systems have. It's not perfect, but it is a definite improvement.Not a bad a way to sum up the 2009 SLK line.

The problem Direct Steer attempts to address is the balance between freeway-cruising comfort and canyon-carving sharpness. The heart of this variable ratio system is a steering rack with specially shaped and spaced teeth. A standard pinion gear rides on top, but as it turns the steering ratio can change dramatically and instantly because it's all done mechanically (with hydraulic power assist, of course).Mercedes claims the number of turns from lock to lock has been reduced by 25 percent, and on the road, the SLKs felt noticeably sharper, without that dead spot on-center. More important is that the system is natural and progressive, free of that disconnected, artificial feel many of the steer-by-wire systems have. It's not perfect, but it is a definite improvement.Not a bad a way to sum up the 2009 SLK line.

Since 1996, Mercedes-Benz has sold over a half million SLKs, making it best-selling luxury roadster in the world, bar none. To keep the competition at bay, Mercedes has tweaked all three grades of its retractable-hardtop hottie. But first, let's look at the lineup: For 2009, all models get new shoes and a nose job -- trimmed back a bit, with the wings fleshed out for a more Formula 1 look. Larger mesh in the grille and redesigned foglamps round out the front-end revisions. The back has been cleaned up, too; taillamps are now tinted, exhaust tips are squared off, and the accent lines have been rubbed out. The lower valence has been styled to look like a diffuser. Interior changes are even harder to spot: Redesigners freshened up the instrument cluster and head unit, which has also been updated with Mercedes's next-generation NTG 2.5 electronics system. There's also a new three-spoke steering wheel, which now controls Benz's new Direct Steer system, but we'll get to that in a moment.For individual models, there are few additional changes. Maybe it's a good thing the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL has changed. The understated and even slightly effeminate lines of the outgoing SL have been given a dramatic overhaul. The new nose is more aggressive and masculine, even strident. In ushering in this change, Mercedes is trying to blend styling cues from its current lineup note the similarity of the new headlamps to those of the CLS and S-Class with homage to the SL's past. Although the technical changes to the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL are modest, the aesthetic revisions are sufficient for Mercedes to present it as a new model. The latest SL might lack the simple, graceful elegance of its illustrious predecessors from the 1950s and '60s, but this convincing presentation should ensure this car's continued success.

What's New
A few style points on the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL are the bold, six-point radiator grille that recalls the SLs of the 1960s and '70s, and the sexy power domes in the hood which hint at the original 300SL of the 1950s. At the rear, a new aero diffuser beneath the bumper emphasizes the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL's sporting credentials, although its functional benefits are questionable. Some of the detailing, such as the gill-style air intakes in the front fenders, seems a little contrived, but there can be no denying that the new SL now has more visual presence than before. The changes to the interior of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL are minimal to say the least. The new instrument dials and three-spoke steering wheel both hint at the SLR, and there's a new hard-disk satellite navigation system with sufficient capacity for music storage. Mercedes has also introduced a version of the Airscarf system pioneered by the SLK, and now the heating elements and fans are incorporated into the seat's head restraints, producing a flow of hot air around your head and neck.

Summary
The most interesting change to the SL is the introduction of new power-assisted variable-ratio steering. The ratio of the steering rack quickens as you dial in more steering lock, increasingly sharply at angles above 5 degrees. In theory, this new system combines improved straight-line stability with quicker response when the road starts to twist. "The car feels much lighter, agile and sporting," Dierks tells us. As before, the power-assist changes according to road speed and works in conjunction with the SL's active body control.

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is offered solely as a two-seat roadster in a single trim level. Standard features include 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon HID headlights, a heated glass rear window, heated exterior mirrors, a semiautomatic fabric soft top, six-way power carbon fiber sport seats, leather and Alcantara upholstery, aluminum trim, Bluetooth phone connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control and a seven-speaker Bose surround-sound system with a trunk-mounted six-CD changer. The SLR's list of limited options includes various interior and soft-top color schemes, as well as 18-inch wheels.

Walkaround
Half-scissor, half-gullwing doors require some creative maneuvering for the driver and passenger to climb in gracefully. That can be remedied with practice, though preferably not in a public place, since all will be staring. The interior design is definitively German and accented with leather, carbon fiber and aluminum. The engine start button hides beneath a flip-up cover on the gearlever. The SLR's race-bred carbon fiber seats offer ample support but lack the adjustability most drivers expect. Mercedes custom tailors seat upholstery to the proportions of every vehicle's owner, although those taller than 6 feet will still be out of luck when it comes to legroom. Don't plan on taking this supercar on a long road trip, either, as the trunk offers a mere 7.2 cubic feet of space -- unless, of course, you're the type to just FedEx your luggage ahead of time.

Sumamry
When you're the proud owner of a rare machine that boasts 617 hp and F1-inspired aerodynamics and suspension, there's pretty much only one way to enjoy driving it: fast. The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren roadster excels on challenging roads and accelerates and brakes with the greatest of ease. But there are a few drawbacks. Some might find that the steering lacks feel, and many enthusiasts bemoan the fact that the car is not available with a manual transmission. Road noise is always persistent, but that's to be somewhat expected for a car with this kind of performance. The carbon ceramic brakes are capable of bringing the SLR to a halt, but they're almost too good -- their instant bite makes it difficult to ease into braking.

2009 Mercedes GL450 Review
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL 450 is the auto maker's first full-size sport utility vehicle. This all-new GL-Class of SUVs features three rows of seating and can seat up to seven passengers. Large and luxurious, the GL is built in the United States alongside the M-Class mid-size SUV and the R-Class touring wagon. The GL is designed to appeal to Mercedes-Benz sedan owners who want the off-road, four-wheel-drive, seven-passenger and 7500-pound towing capabilities that come with a full-size SUV along with the luxury and safety features they have in their other Mercedes vehicles. While their names sound similar, don't confuse the new GL-Class with the venerable G-Class or Gelandewagen. The GL shares nothing in common with the utiliarian G-Class, which will remain part of the Mercedes model lineup. Initially available in one form, the Mercedes-Benz GL 450 is large and capable off road yet feels surprisingly car-like on the road. That car-like feeling comes in part because this is the first full-size SUV built around a unibody architecture instead of traditional body-on-frame construction. Mercedes says the GL is strong enough to tow a 30-foot boat, a trailer carrying three horses, or a good-sized Airstream travel trailer.

Model Lineup
The GL-Class launches with a single model. The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL 450 comes with a 335-hp V8 engine similar to the one in the new S-Class sedan. Additional models will be coming, starting early in calendar year 2009 with the GL 320 CDI, which comes with a diesel engine. Later, the GL will be available with Mercedes' breakthrough BlueTec diesel powertrain. The Mercedes-Benz GL 450 ($54,900) comes with a 4.6-liter V8 engine, seven-speed automatic transmission, the 4MATIC four-wheel drive system, and the Airmatic air suspension system. It comes with seating for seven and with a third row that powers up or down at the touch of a button. Options include Distronic radar-controlled cruise control; a rear-seat entertainment system with two screens; Keyless Go, which allows the car to be started as long as the key is inside the vehicle; Parktronic, which uses sonar to detect obstacles near the vehicle; a power rear tailgate; Harman/Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system; and DVD navigation. Safety features that come standard include eight airbags, including side airbags for all four outboard first and second-row seating positions as well as side curtain airbags that protect occupants in all three rows. It comes with active front head restraints, LATCH tethers for child safety seats, and three-point safety belts for all seating positions; make sure everyone in the vehicle always wears those seat belts because they're your first line of defense in a crash. Active safety features (to help you avoid a crash) include an Electronic Stability Program, anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist Plus, and four-wheel electronic traction control. Optional safety features include Parktronic and a rear-view camera, each of which can help alert the driver obstacles or people, including children, behind the vehicle.

Politically and environmentally correct, it isnt. And were glad for that. For as much as were chafed that we'll never see gas under three dollars per gallon again, we are encouraged that manufacturers still have tuning departments that are passionate about performance. This, in turn, inspires them to push the envelope further. So, of course we were ecstatic when Mercedes dropped off a 2009 C63 AMG sport sedan recently.

Walkaround
The C63s 6.3-liter V8 is a work of art. And it is also the work of one pair of hands. Hand-built in the AMG works in Affalterbach, it prominently displays a build plate with the engine builders signature in the area over the intake manifold. The rest of the engine room is sublime, as is its performance. About performance: Of the cars in the competitive set, the C63 AMG, with 451 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, is the class of the field, and trumps its closest competitor, the Audi RS4 by 31 horses. Torque-wise, the C63 surpasses the Lexus IS-F, which is whipped handily by a 72 lb-ft advantage over its 371 lb-ft. The Cadillac CTS-V did offer a 400 hp / 395 lb-ft engine choice, but it is currently out of production. Check back in a few weeks for Leftlanes review of the all-new 2009 Cadillac CTS-V. Throttle up, and the power from the V8 pushes you back in the seat like a 757 at takeoff. The sound from under the power-bulged hood is throaty and deep. Its power you can hear and feel. Speed is artificially limited to 155 mph. The drivetrain throws down with the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic with blipping function for immediate response. The side-to-side manual function of the shift lever is one we have never warmed to, and much rather prefer the aluminum paddle shift levers mounted on the steering wheel. Below the gear indicator is a preference selector, which allows choices in the C-comfort, S-sport, or M-manual modes to determine engine mapping for fast or comfortable gear changes. A distinctly faster shift occurs when the sport mode is selected over the comfort mode. The throttle blipping is basically rev matchingwhich we found to settle the car while downshifting before executing a challenging turn.

Summary
The AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission with paddle shift levers on the flat-bottomed AMG steering wheel offers a hands-on way to shift through the cogs with both mitts on the wheel. At the same time, it incorporates a rev-matching feature which powers up or down to the logical RPM for the gear selected. Another breakthrough is AMGs speed-sensitive sports steering. Recently seen in the newly introduced SL 63 and SL 65 roadsters, it also shows up in the C63, and enables quicker turns in tighter radius while giving more subtle feedback on wider radius turns

It is a sedan that Mercedes-Benz designates as a coupe: a car with four doors cleverly disguised in the body of a coupe. Long and low, the CLS gives the illusion of an elegantly stretched two-door. It is, in my humble opinion, one of the most gorgeous cars on the road today. So no wonder that after nearly four years, Mercedes chose not to mess with success in giving the four-door coupe an expected, if not really necessary update. For 2009, the CLS Class gets new front and rear fascia, new side mirrors, some new wheels, a three-spoke steering wheel and improved telematics.At the front, the grille has been modified with two louvres instead of four, placed against a grey diamond-shaped mesh background. At the rear, a new apron brings the bumper lower, accented by trapezoidal tail pipes replacing the previous oval exhaust openings. The tail lights are now LED units that light up faster. The rear turn signals look like arrows when they light up. LED technology has also been employed in the side markers and outside mirrors. LED turn signals built into the mirrors are also arranged in the shape of an arrow. The surface area of the mirror has been enlarged.Inside the most noticeable change is the new three-spoke steering wheel. The CLS 550 gauges have also received an update with new white dials. Audio, entertainment and telematics enhancements include standard Bluetooth telephone connectivity, a higher-resolution 6.5-inch colour display with a new graphic interface, a navigation system now located on a hard drive and a standard audio system capable of accepting input from just about any device, as well as Sirius Satellite radio.

Walkaround
The 12-speaker Harmon/Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system includes a video-capable DVD changer, an SD memory card slot and cables to accommodate iPod, USB and Aux-in Audio. The navigation system uses a new generation Linguatronic system.The standard interior trim is black birds eye maple, while dark ash wood and burl walnut wood trim are optional.The standard equipment list on the CLS 550 is voluminous but notable highlights include dual front, side-window curtain, front and rear seat side and driver's knee air bags and Pre-Safe Parkatronic, sunroof, heated steering wheel, airmatic air suspension, active bi-xenon headlights, heated windshield washer system, and new 18-inch 5-twin spoke wheels.The latter can be upgraded to either an 18-inch five-spoke design or a more sporty five-spoke design with larger performance tires.The equipment list on the CLS 63 AMG is similar, although the standard wheel is a 19-inch 5-triple spoke design, with a forged 19-inch five-spoke design optional. Power for both the CLS 550 and the CLS 63 AMG has not changed: the base engine is a 32-valve 5.5-litre (5461 cc, actually) V8 that produces 382 hp and 391 ft-lb of torque, while the CLS AMG has a 6.2-litre V8 with a rated output of 507 hp and 465 ft-lb of torque.

Summary
Published acceleration times for both, from zero to 100 km/h, are 5.4 seconds and 4.5 seconds respectively. We had the opportunity to drive both versions on Austria's fast moving freeways, as well as some challenging back roads in the hilly region around Aggsbach on the Danube River. On the big highway, the CLS 63 AMG is a hard-charging cruiser, with an ever present V8 rumble and exhaust burble. A new AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic Plus transmission gives the 6.2-litre a throttle blip with each downshift, enhancing the sporty nature of this car. Paddle shifters allow you to move through the gears manually and to hold a gear even against the rev limiter.But the added weight of the bigger engine gives the handling advantage to the CLS 550, which is no slouch itself, despite the lower performance specifications. Both cars had a tendency to display significant understeer when pushed hard through tight corners, but the heavier 63 AMG proved to be a handful. The more nimble CLS 550 was restrained only by its electronic stability program (ESP), which forced the car into an understeer mode, even when disabled. While ESP is a potentially life-saving safety feature, it can sometimes make a rear-wheel driving car behave like a front-wheel driver.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster Review
Maybe it's a good thing the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL has changed. The understated and even slightly effeminate lines of the outgoing SL have been given a dramatic overhaul. The new nose is more aggressive and masculine, even strident. In ushering in this change, Mercedes is trying to blend styling cues from its current lineup note the similarity of the new headlamps to those of the CLS and S-Class with homage to the SL's past. Although the technical changes to the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL are modest, the aesthetic revisions are sufficient for Mercedes to present it as a new model. The latest SL might lack the simple, graceful elegance of its illustrious predecessors from the 1950s and '60s, but this convincing presentation should ensure this car's continued success.

What's New
A few style points on the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL are the bold, six-point radiator grille that recalls the SLs of the 1960s and '70s, and the sexy power domes in the hood which hint at the original 300SL of the 1950s. At the rear, a new aero diffuser beneath the bumper emphasizes the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL's sporting credentials, although its functional benefits are questionable. Some of the detailing, such as the gill-style air intakes in the front fenders, seems a little contrived, but there can be no denying that the new SL now has more visual presence than before. The changes to the interior of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL are minimal to say the least. The new instrument dials and three-spoke steering wheel both hint at the SLR, and there's a new hard-disk satellite navigation system with sufficient capacity for music storage. Mercedes has also introduced a version of the Airscarf system pioneered by the SLK, and now the heating elements and fans are incorporated into the seat's head restraints, producing a flow of hot air around your head and neck.

Summary
The most interesting change to the SL is the introduction of new power-assisted variable-ratio steering. The ratio of the steering rack quickens as you dial in more steering lock, increasingly sharply at angles above 5 degrees. In theory, this new system combines improved straight-line stability with quicker response when the road starts to twist. "The car feels much lighter, agile and sporting," Dierks tells us. As before, the power-assist changes according to road speed and works in conjunction with the SL's active body control.

2010 Mercedes E-Class Review
As Mercedes-Benz expanded its lineup to some 15 separate nameplatesnot counting the AMG modelsit resulted in mass confusion on the showroom floor and significant marketing challenges in promoting individual models. Things needed to get simpler, and now they have. The replacements for Mercedes mid-sized CLK-class coupe and cabriolet models will henceforth be identified as part of the E-class family. (The CL coupes will also become part of the S-class lineup.) The new E coupe has more suspension and powertrain bits in common with the E than the C, according to Mercedes-Benz USA product manager Bernhard Glaser. Dimensionally, however, the E coupe is much closer to the compact C than the mid-sized E, sharing the C-classs 108.7-inch wheelbase, and the exterior dimensions remain within an inch or two of the C even given the wider, longer, and lower bodywork. Compared with the E-class sedan, however, the E coupe has a three-inch-lower roof and five fewer inches of wheelbase, and is about 200 pounds lighter, seven inches shorter, and a whopping five-and-a-half inches narrower.

Walkaround
Mercedes clearly wants the E coupe to be seen as an E, and so it adopts the sedans design cues, including quad headlamps and the Ponton-inspired rear quarters. Few pieces are actually shared, however; look closer and youll notice that the fender contours are ever-so-slightly exaggerated compared with those of the sedan and that the low-beam headlamps are unique. Unique also describes the grille treatmenthere, it features two bars bracketing the three-pointed star, whereas the sedan has three or four grille slats with a vertical hood ornament. Most distinct, however, is the roofline, which like that of the CLK, remains pillarless (that is, if you dont count the mullion that forms the little rear quarter window). Wheels start out at 17 inches in diameter, with 18s optional on the E350 and standard on the E550. All E coupes get a full-length, partially retractable moonroof as standard equipment, the light from which is particularly appreciable from the snug rear bucket seats. In the front row, the low-mounted seats ensure a sporty driving position, and settling in is made easier as the seatbelts are presented upon startup by motorized arms. The driver faces a dashboard that recalls the sedans retro-inspired, angular cabinetry without copying it outright; differences include a subtle V-shape that helps reduce the designs imposing squareness, while a conventional console-mounted transmission shifteras found on the C-classstands in for the sedans column-mounted electronic gear stalk.

Summary
The driver faces arguably one of Mercedes best-ever gauge clusters, which combines five Porsche-like intersecting circles with clear, crisp displays. All E-classes feature Mercedes COMAND infotainment system that bundles secondary controls into a reasonably sensible screen-based interface, and E550 coupes add navigation as standard. Other options include front seat ventilation, pneumatically adjustable seat bolsters, and a five-channel surround sound stereo.

A large, grand touring coupe such as the 2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is something of a rare sight, a Weimaraner in a suburb full of golden retrievers. Usually, folks with the big bucks and a penchant for six-figure automobiles get either a large sedan or a flashy sports car. But there's something undeniably elegant about a big coupe with its stretched-out body, sleek roof line and hunkered stance. Staying true to Mercedes' coupe tradition, the CL-Class features frameless side windows as well as a lack of B-pillars, which together give the car an airy look and feel. A rising character line and a tapered rear end further the CL's ready-to-pounce impression, which is confirmed when one nudges the accelerator pedal. When you're not being pressed back into the seat by a wave of torque, you'll want to take a few moments to appreciate the handsome cabin design. The tasteful use of wood and metallic accents, along with impeccable fit and finish, bring old-world class to the big Benz that would give a Bentley a run for its money. Based loosely on the S-Class platform, the CL-Class shares that sedan's power plants and leading-edge high-tech features, such as night view assist. The CL-Class is offered in four trims that include the anything-but-base CL550, the V12-powered CL600 and the even more pumped-up AMG brothers, known as the CL63 and CL65. In the niche segment of exotic four-seat grand touring coupes, not many can match the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class's enticing blend of passenger room, performance and opulence. Yet, in spite of its smooth moves, the CL-Class is too heavy to be much of an athlete, so those looking for more of a sports car feel should consider the BMW 6 Series or Maserati GranTurismo. That said, we expect that just about everyone who takes a CL for a test-drive will be smitten by its classy presence and quiet, luxurious cabin. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is a large grand touring coupe available in four trim levels: CL550, CL600, CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG. The CL550 comes packed with luxury features such as bi-xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a hard-drive-based navigation system, a 600-watt Harman Kardon audio system with six-disc CD/DVD changer and satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, 14-way power heated front seats, power sunroof, power door and trunk closers and park assist. Options for the CL550 include the AMG Sport Package and a pair of premium packages. The former is essentially fancy wheels and a body kit, while the latter two equipment groups include features such as keyless starting, ventilated front seats, a nighttime vision assist system and "Drive Dynamic" front seats whose bolsters automatically inflate to add support during hard cornering. The V12-powered CL600 adds those premium packages' features, leaving but two options: an iPod integration kit and 19-inch wheels. The ultra-performance-focused AMG versions offer even more powerful engines as well as unique exterior enhancements, sport-tuned suspensions, high-performance brakes, 20-inch wheels and AMG multicontour leather sport seats. The chief difference between these two super coupes is their engine choices: the CL63 AMG has a 518-horsepower V8 while the CL65 AMG features a 604-hp twin-turbo V12. There is also a limited-edition CL65 painted in "liquid metal" to celebrate AMG's 40th anniversary. Powertrains and Performance The 2008 Mercedes-Benz CL550 is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 (382 hp and 391 pound-feet of torque) that sends its power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. The CL600 features a twin-turbo V12 engine (510 hp and 612 lb-ft) mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Either way, performance is impressive, with the CL550 hitting 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and the CL600 doing the same in just 4.5 seconds. The CL63 AMG delivers a more visceral experience with its AMG-developed 6.3-liter normally aspirated V8 (518 hp and 465 lb-ft) that's paired with a performance-tuned version of the seven-speed automatic transmission. The end result is a 0-60 time equal to the CL600. The truly power-hungry will lust after the CL65 (604 hp and 738 lb-ft), which can leap to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and possesses high-speed acceleration more akin to a Formula 1 racecar than a comfy four-place GT. Safety All the latest safety features are standard, such as a full complement of airbags (including side curtain and driver's knee), adaptive xenon headlights and stability control. There is also PreSafe which, when it senses a possible accident (via rapid brake pedal and steering inputs and/or stability control intervention) will automatically position the front-passenger seat for optimum airbag use and close the windows and sunroof if a rollover is imminent. All but the CL550 feature PreSafe Brake, which can automatically apply up to 40 percent of the vehicle's braking capacity when it senses a seemingly imminent collision.
